Explorer ProgramEach year Cary Area EMS hosts an Explorer post program. High school students age 14-21 participate in an EMS Explorer Post, which is a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical decisions over their lifetime in achieving their full potential. Exploring is based on a relationship between the community and the youth. The main goals are to allow young people to gain practical experience and leadership, provide experiential activities and to have a chance to learn and grow in a supportive, caring environment. In the city of Cary, students spend time with EMS personnel. The Explorer students get an opportunity to gain practical field experience and interact with members of the community. Some of the topics covered include responding to an emergency, assessing a patient, first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, AED use, aspects of medical emergencies, terminology, and public interaction. The Explorers are given classroom instruction and then tested on the skills learned prior to going into the field to observe and/or assist medical personnel. This is a great way for young people to learn about the emergency medical profession and get an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience. The Explorer’s have been involved with various community service activities and assist with large events in Cary. They are trained as first responders and have the opportunity to ride on the ambulance once they have completed certain requirements and are at least 16 years of age. Training occurs regularly along with special events. Additionally, an elected body of officers from within the post governs the Explorer program. These students are the leaders of the group and help to provide direction and plan activities/events.
